The Cleveland Rowing Foundation (CRF) is home to many rowing clubs and programs. The adult club within CRF is called Western Reserve Rowing Association (WRRA). WRRA has almost 400 adult members and has a variety of sweep and sculling programs to meet the needs of its membership. Each program has a different emphasis, ranging from having fun and socializing to competing at out-of-town regattas. Some programs are designed for those who have never rowed before (novices), while others require a higher level of experience and time commitment. Click on the links below for additional information.
Sweep Rowing (WRRA)
When once a week sessions as part of SRL aren't enough, rowers can participate in our Sweep Rowing Program. Sweep Rowing offers members the chance to participate in one of our coached rowing programs for an additional cost. The programs have rowers with varied experience, skills, goals, and fitness levels, and as such, some of the programs focus on developing technical skills and gaining fitness, while other programs focus on preparing rowers for racing competitively at regattas. Members with the necessary safety qualifications may also choose to organize their own practices based on equipment availability. Please visit their website for more information.
Summer Rowing League (WRRA)
Summer Rowing League is the most popular program, and gives participants a chance to row once a week, along with opportunities to compete against each other in regattas at the CRF boathouse. Novices and experienced rowers age 21 or older are placed on teams and assigned a coach. SRL runs from May through August and is a great way to meet people. Some teams stay together and keep coming back year after year. Many of our members start out in SRL but eventually decide they want to become more involved in rowing and join one of our other programs. Please visit their website for more information.
Fall Rowing League (WRRA)
Fall Rowing League is similar to SRL, but is run in the fall, from September through October. The primary difference from SRL is that there are no regattas scheduled. Please visit the SRL website for more information.
Learn to Row (WRRA)
Learn to Row is a concentrated instruction session for rowers age 21 or older without any prior rowing experience (novices). Topics to be covered include safety, rowing terminology, a boathouse tour, and boat handling. You will receive instruction in rowing technique on a stationary rowing machine as well as on-the-water instruction (weather permitting). Sessions are offered at the end of April and beginning of September. Please visit their website for more information.
Corporate Rowing Program
Corporate Rowing is a wonderful opportunity for various corporations to provide groups of employees an exciting team building experience outside of the office. Sessions are available upon request and can be designed to meet your corporation's needs. Interested in a coporate rowing program for your organization? Contact the Western Reserve Rowing Association inquiry email address for more information.
Sculling
WRRA also has opportunities for scullers. Those with the proper safety credentials and experience can scull in their own equipment or use one of the club's doubles or singles once they have qualified to be an independent sculler. Less experienced scullers require supervision by qualified individuals. Periodically, WRRA may offer sculling clinics for those interested in learning to scull or for experienced scullers who want to advance their skills. Interested in learning to scull or want to store your boat here? Please contact Tim Marcovy, Sculling Committee.
